Today, was the final day of one of the most impacting professional learning programs I have been involved with in my career. The speakers on Day 3 of the Google Champions Sydney Symposium shared invaluable insights on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in revolutionising education.
Jim Sill started the day by talking about how it's important for everyone in our schools and groups to feel like they matter and that they're valued. He said that when we do things together as a group, it helps our communities become better and stronger. Jim also made a big point about how crucial it is to support each other and make everyone feel important. He talked about this idea of lifting each other up, which basically means helping each other out and being there when someone needs a hand. This kind of support, he said, is really key for students and teachers to do well and feel good about what they're doing. It resonated with the essence of creating a supportive and nurturing environment for both students and educators.
From Rain Clouds to Rainbows: Solutions for Educators
Rachel Duckworth's presentation about resilience really hit home. She talked about her experience through natural disasters in New Zealand and how teachers can be solid anchors for students when they're being challenged by tough times. They don't just teach maths or science; they also listen to what students are going through, make them feel safe, and show them how to handle tough stuff. It's like they're creating a safe zone where students can learn how to bounce back from challenges.
What I found impressive was the connection Rachel was able to make about using nature to help build resilience. She pointed out how being outdoors can really help people heal and become stronger. It's like nature has this power to make us feel better and more able to handle whatever life throws at us. Her emphasis on embracing the outdoors as a tool for building resilience reminded me of the power of nature in healing and growth.
Future of Generative AI
Then came Gary Kasperton. He opened up a conversation about the amazing world of Generative AI. He talked about the categories of AI, from machine learning and those big language models (LLMs). He began to share about how they're reshaping education by making AI tutors, virtual helpers for learning, and customised study. It got me really interested in how these things could totally change the game for students and teachers.
He also discussed the, the catch. Using Generative AI isn't all smooth sailing. Gary mentioned this thing called "hallucinations," where AI makes things up or goes off track. That's where the importance of responsible AI comes in. It's about making sure that AI helps society, doesn't favour one group over another, and keeps everything safe and private in its development and deployment.
Generative AI might be a disruption could transform the way educators and students teach and learn in education but we have to be careful. Ensuring that there is equity and AI helps everyone by minimising biases and keeps our information secure.
Google Duet AI
Clay Smith's presentation on Google Duet AI unveiled a promising tool tailored for educational settings within Google Workspace applications. Its emphasis on safeguarding data privacy while providing task-oriented support and streamlining workflows captured attention. The commitment to responsible AI use, particularly in educational environments where privacy and ethical considerations are paramount, stood out. Google Duet AI's capacity to enhance efficiency without compromising privacy aligns with the growing need for responsible AI integration in education.
One of the symposium's pivotal discussions revolved around the art of crafting effective AI prompts. This facet holds immense significance as it delineates the boundary between leveraging AI's capabilities optimally and ensuring it serves its intended purpose. The strategies outlined during the symposium gave me a structured approach to utilising AI while maintaining alignment with educational objectives.

How might we use AI to solve really Big Worldwide Problems
Kimberly Hall and Chris Hart's discussion on AI's implications for global educational challenges offered a compelling outlook on the transformative capacity of technology in education. Their identification of key issues such as personalised learning, equity, and teacher workload ran as a thread throughout the multifaceted problems faced by educational systems worldwide. AI-powered solutions like personalised tutors and adaptive learning platforms were highlighted as potential remedies for these challenges. The prospect of leveraging this to tailor education to individual needs and address disparities in learning opportunities is something I am keen to continue to ponder.
It became evident that in the context of AI introduced a spectrum of possibilities for us as educators. They stressed the importance of ethical development, emphasising the need for human centred design and the ethical use of AI in educational settings.
